Mental Health and Psychological Practice in the United Arab Emirates is the first volume of its kind to explore the professional field of psychology in a Middle Eastern country. The United Arab Emirates, a rapidly developing and dynamic nation with a large expatriate population (85%), provides a unique backdrop for the practice of psychology in both the academic and applied contexts. Contributors represent the diversity of the population as well as the type of work psychologists do, and they discuss challenges faced in their work when operating in such a unique and multinational society. Various subfields such as clinical practice, research, Industrial-Organizational work as well as the place of Islam within the broader psychology context are all addressed. Contributors highlight key lessons learned from the UAE experience that are relevant for the field at the global level.
The numbers of Gulf students, particularly those from the UAE, that travel specifically to the United Kingdom (UK) for tertiary education is continuously increasing. Reflecting upon sojourner identities during their time abroad, as well as repatriation experiences upon their return, this chapter explores cultural identity transformation for Emiratis between two different locations. This discussion hopes to make a contribution to those working within the international education sector and to students themselves. Ways universities and educators can assist international students during their academic journeys as well as their transition back to their countries of origin are also discussed.Buy Now
